November:

Nuvein Soysa                                           AGE 5

Our youngest drum student. Nuvein just started learning the drums at age 4 and a half. Now at 5 years old, he is shaping up to becoming a confident young drummer. He performed very well at our recent music concert in December and he really got the crowd going with his drumming skills on ‘We wiil rock you’.

We welcome Nuvein to our drumming community at Beat Factor Music Academy.

NAME: Peter Kotsiofis                       AGE: 14         

I have known Peter since he started drum lessons with me when he was 9 years old. He has shown a keen interest in drumming and its complexities, from an early age way back with his involvement in our African Drumming classes at our local community centre, to taking up private lessons on the drum-kit at Beat Factor Music.

He has always been involved in our student concert, (performer & co -host) and with the drumming group. I would like to thank him and his family for their continuing support.

What do you most enjoy about playing drums?

I enjoy learning new songs and beats.

Why did you choose drums as your main instrument?

It interested me the most out of all the instruments

Some piano

Can you tell us what drum pieces or songs your are currently working on in the drum lessons?

DRUM GROUP CLASSES:

Drum group class – What do you like most when we get together with other students in the drum group classes we have sometimes?

I enjoy the interaction and learning experience it provides

Do you enjoy trying out different percussion instruments, such as African and Latin percussion in the group classes?

Do you enjoy learning new rhythms in those African and Latin music styles and putting it together with the rest of the students in a group situation?

Performing in front of people

August:

James Marshall – 18 Years

I have known James since he started drum lessons with me when he was 9 years old. He has always shown a great interest in drumming from an early age. He has always been involved in our student concert and drumming group. throughout the nine years. He is a great role model for the other up and coming students. James is currently completing his Year 12 in VET Music, Cert III Music. He has been busy rehearsing and performing with his band during the year, and received many awards as a band and as individual members.

This interview was recorded a few years ago, but regardless of that, we can get to know a bit more about James and his drumming background. I hope to sit down with James again soon and do an update interview, once his school commitments has finished.

In the meantime, enjoy the interview with James.

 

Min Jun Kwon – 13 Years

 

 

 

 

 

Min Jun has shared the following information about himself and his drumming.

What do you most enjoy about playing drums?

“Hitting the toms and playing on beats”.

Why did you choose drums as your main instrument?

“It’s when I hit the drums it releases my stress and emotions and makes me feel strong and gain confidence”.

Do you play another instrument?

“ The saxophone and piano”

ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE LEARNING:

Can you tell us what drum pieces or songs your are currently working on in the drum lessons?

“Technical exercises such as, drum rolls and drum fills

Beats: Shuffle and Blues styles.

Songs: The Happy Song – (Pharell Williams), Abacadabra – (Jessie J) & ‘Love me Again’ – (John Newman).

DRUM GROUP CLASSES:

Drum group class – What do you like most when we get together with other students in the drum group classes we have sometimes?

“Performing and showing each other how much we’ve learnt throughout the year”.

WORLD PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS:

Do you enjoy trying out different percussion instruments, such as African and Latin percussion in the group classes?

“ I enjoy playing the Ago-go bell, since the sound seemed to stand out from the rest”.

Do you enjoy learning new rhythms in those African and Latin music styles and putting it together with the rest of the students in a group situation?

‘Yes, it feels like I’m in a real band performing in front of important people”.

STUDENT CONCERT:

What do you like about the student concert that we have at the end of the year? 

“ Showing each other how much we have learnt and finishing the year with a band”.

Do you like playing your drum solo drum pieces, Group pieces and having special guests to perform?

“Yes, it gives me a chance to show how much I’ve done and completed and let others know what I can do”.

YOUR DRUM-KIT:

What drum-kit are you playing at the moment?

“Pearl Drum set”.

What is your drum setup at he moment?

“Four toms, including snare drum and three cymbals”.

Is there any other special things that you have?

“ I have extra drum sticks”.
