Rod is a musician, composer and music educator. He plays a number of instruments, drums, bass, guitar, keyboard and Latin and African percussion. Rod has played with a number of musicians and artists from various musical styles and background, from Rock, Jazz, Latin, Reggae, independent bands to commercial Electronic outfits.
His compositions has received industry acknowledgement, radio airplay and recorded CD’s released in Australia and overseas. Rod’s compositions’ includes a vast array of genres and production styles, which include pieces written for short films, documentaries, children’s show, business promotion and commercial pop tunes.
Rod is an accomplished music, music technology and VET music educator. A graduate of Music from The College of the Arts, Melbourne University where he was mentored by Australian Jazz legend Brian Brown, Dr. Tony Gould and Dr. Rob Vincs. His drumming and percussion skills developed even more under the direction of Alex Pertout , David Jones and Michael Jordon. Since receiving his Teaching Diploma from Monash University and a Masters Degree in Music Technology, Rod has worked for the Education department for the last 20 years teaching Drums, Bass, guitar and music technology in schools and trains students in Cert III music in music performance, songwriting, electronic compositions and music business.
Rod currently runs Beat Factor Music Academy where he teaches students who are passionate in drums, bass and electronic music. He also runs Beat Factor Productions which provides music production training and recording services for artists and business.
Rod’s passion for drumming has seen him working with local residents in the Western suburbs of Point Cook, where he runs weekly Community Drum Group Classes for adults who want to learn the finer skills of drumming from African, Brazilian, Cuban and other world rhythms.
Rod integrates technology into performance by using Roland electronic V-Drums and SPD-SX triggers as well as music software such as Pro tools, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live, Native Instruments Komplete, Reaper and Garage Band for compositions. Hardware controllers such as Native Instruments Machine MK2, Ableton Push, Novation Launchpad, Yamaha RM1X remixer and the classic Yamaha RX 5 drum machine are used individually or combined together to create some very unique drum beats and rhythms.
