NEW BEGINNERS  CLASS:

STARTING 2 JUNE TO 23 JUNE, 2022

FOR THOSE WITH NO OR  LIMITED DRUMMING EXPERIENCE.

Where: Saltwater Community Centre, Point Cook.

4 week course starts from Thursday 2 JUNE

$80 for 4 week sessions per person

Or $25 one off or casual class per person.

When: Thursdays 7.30pm – 8.30 pm

The 4 week course is ideal for those with have some or limited experience in African drumming and stick drumming and who want to try out or refine their skills and technique in their drumming.

  • It’s a great way to meet like minded people and make some music together.
  • come and learn drum and play African and Samba rhythms
  • Share the music and culture and have fun the same time
  • Open to all levels of experience.
  • Easy step by Step learning
  • Students have the opportunity to perform with the group at community events if they wish to participate.

Where: Woods St Art Space, Laverton

SESSION 1: From August 2 to August 30 (5 Weeks)

SESSION 2: From  September 6 to September 27 (5 Weeks)

SESSION 3: From October4  to October 25 (5 Weeks)

SESSION 4: From November 8 to November 29 (5 Weeks)

STUDENT CONCERT : December 10 or 11 (TBC)

(5 week course $100 or $25 casual class per person)

(Places limited to 10-12 participants-Please note minimum of 4 students required to run the classes)

 

 

Classes focuses on:

  1. Developing on tones and slaps technique on the Djembe drum
  2. Exploring other African percussion, Dun Duns, (Big Low Drums), Gankogui (Bell) & Axsatse (Shakers)
  3. Learning techniques and rhythms on Brazilian percussion
  4. Working on more complex ensemble pieces
  5. Developing listening skills and solo ideas 
  6. Holding a steady tempo in a supporting role and as a soloist.
  7. Developing on Ensemble skills & working as a team
  8. Creating a sense of well-being and creativeness

Rod Pilois

Rod Pilois is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and music educator. Rod has played with a number of artists from various musical styles and background, from Rock, Jazz, Latin, Reggae & Ska. Projects have been from independent bands to commercial outfits and has performed with other musicians and artists overseas.

Brought up in Melbourne from an early age, his drumming experience began in Primary School, where he played in the drum corps, marching the students to their classrooms every morning.

Rod later attended the prestigious, College of the Arts, Melbourne, where he completed his Bachelor of Music Performance Degree. He later attended Monash University, where he obtained his Graduate Diploma of Education. Since then Rod has worked for the Education department for the last 20 years teaching Drums, Bass, guitar and running percussion ensembles and rock bands in schools. Since obtaining his Masters Degree in Music Technology from University of Newcastle, Rod has trained students in Certificate III music in music performance, song-writing, electronic compositions and music business.

Out of his passion for drumming and teaching, he started a community drumming group (Beat Factor Drum Group) in the West where his students have performed at various multicultural arts Festivals and Pop Up Parks performing African and Latin drumming. Rod has also performed at past major events, such as Australian Grand Prix, Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, AFL Grand Final Parade, Moomba Parade and at various corporate events in Melbourne.
