A beginner class for people who have never taken a drum class or drummers who would like to refine their skills and technique.

African & Samba Drumming for Beginners runs for 4-week sessions, on Tuesdays, 6.30 pm – 7.15 pm (Melbourne Timezone).

2021 Session Dates- Term 4

Session 1: 05/10/21 to 26/10/21- (4 weeks)
Session 2: 09/11/21 to 30/11/21-(4 weeks)
Session 3: 09/11/21 to 14/12/21-(6 weeks)- Intermediate class

Drumming up a storm

 

The 4 Week Beginners course is ideal for those with limited or no experience in African drumming/hand drumming who want try out their drumming skills.

Learn the basics of African and Samba drumming in a safe, fun and creative environment.

No Drums-no problem, participants can try out their rhythmic skills on house hold objects such as, tables, chairs, buckets, pots and pans, utensils, pencils & pens, rulers, body percussion and anything that they can use around the house as a drum.

Beginner Course focuses on:

  1. Learning basic technique on the African & Brazilian percussion
  2. Developing a strong groove, feel and control
  3. Developing on timing and listening skills
  4. Developing on Ensemble skills & working as a team
  5. Creating a sense of well-being and having fun

Rod Pilois

Rod Pilois is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and music educator. Rod has played with a number of artists from various musical styles and background, from Rock, Jazz, Latin, Reggae & Ska. Projects have been from independent bands to commercial outfits and has performed with other musicians and artists overseas.

Brought up in Melbourne from an early age, his drumming experience began in Primary School, where he played in the drum corps, marching the students to their classrooms every morning.

Rod later attended the prestigious, College of the Arts, Melbourne, where he completed his Bachelor of Music Performance Degree. He later attended Monash University, where he obtained his Graduate Diploma of Education. Since then Rod has worked for the Education department for the last 20 years teaching Drums, Bass, guitar and running percussion ensembles and rock bands in schools. Since obtaining his Masters Degree in Music Technology from University of Newcastle, Rod has trained students in Certificate III music in music performance, song-writing, electronic compositions and music business.

Out of his passion for drumming and teaching, he started a community drumming group (Beat Factor Drum Group) in the West where his students have performed at various multicultural arts Festivals and Pop Up Parks performing African and Latin drumming. Rod has also performed at past major events, such as Australian Grand Prix, Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, AFL Grand Final Parade, Moomba Parade and at various corporate events in Melbourne.

INTERMEDIATE AFRICAN & SAMBA

Intermediate Course focuses on:

  1. Developing on tones and slaps technique on the Djembe drum
  2. Developing a strong groove and stamina for extended play
  3. Exploring other African percussion, Dun Duns, (Big Low Drums), Gankogui (Bell) & Axsatse (Shakers)
  4. Rhythmic relationships between Djembe and other African percussion instruments.
  5. Working on more complex ensemble pieces
  6. Developing solo ideas and free improvisation skills
  7. Holding a steady tempo in a supporting role and as a soloist.
  8. Developing on Ensemble skills & working as a team
  9. Creating a sense of well-being and creativeness

Intermediates:

  • Tuesdays: 7.30 pm -8.15 pm (Melbourne Time zone)
